Sometimes being selfish is good!
Sometimes being selfish is good!
I'm sharing with you an extract from Osho's book "Love Freedom Loneliness", which deals with selfishness. I identify with this because the author expresses that selfishness is good for achieving happiness. I know this may sound a little strange, but I invite you to read the following extract, to draw your own conclusions.
The virtues of selfishness
Keep this in mind: if you're not selfish, you won't be altruistic.
If you're not selfish, you won't be generous.
Only the truly selfish person can be generous. However, this is something to understand because it seems paradoxical.
What does it mean to be selfish?
First, focus on yourself.
Secondly, always seek personal happiness. If you're self-centered, you'll be selfish no matter what you do. You can devote yourself to helping others, but you'll only do it because you enjoy doing it, because it makes you happy, you feel good doing it, you find yourself doing it. You're not fulfilling any duty, you're not serving humanity. You are not a great martyr; you sacrifice nothing.
All these words are meaningless. You're happy in your own way; it makes you feel good. You go to the hospital and help the sick or you help the poor, but it's something you like to do. That's how you grow. Deep down, you feel happy and at peace, happy with yourself.
The self-centered person is always looking for happiness.
Such is the paradox of the situation
The more you pursue your happiness, the more you'll help others to be happy. Because that's the only way to be happy in the world. If everyone around you isn't happy, you can't be, because a man isn't an island. He's part of a vast continent.
If you want to be happy, you have to help those around you to be happy. Only then can you be happy."
